A Personal Representative's Job Duties
By Arthur M. Fowler, III - 10/26/2024
A Personal Representative has many specific jobs to do when managing an estate. Here are a few examples:
-
Handle Taxes: Sort out any taxes the deceased person owed and any taxes related to the Estate itself.
-
Close Bank Accounts: Close the deceased person's bank accounts banks and deposit that money into the Estate's bank account.
-
Sell Items: If there are things that aren't specifically given to someone in the Last Will or there is not a Last Will, the Personal Representative might need to sell these things.
-
Answer Questions: Be ready to respond to any questions or concerns from beneficiaries or heirs.
-
List Assets: Unless waived, make a detailed list of everything the deceased person owned that's part of the estate.
-
Track Finances: Keep careful records of all money and assets that come into or go out of the estate.
-
Notify Creditors: Inform all known or easily identifiable creditors about the deceased person's passing and the probate process.
-
Review Claims: Look over any claims made against the estate and decide which ones are valid and need payment or if any should be disputed.
Working closely with a lawyer who knows about probate can help the Personal Representative handle these tasks correctly.
